Nigeria sails onto IMO Council with blue economy pledge

Nigeria threw a thank-you lunch in London after landing a spot on the maritime organization's council, and the marine minister told everyone his country plans to actually show up and do the work. Adegboyega Oyetola said the election proves other nations still trust Nigeria to help shape global shipping rules covering safety standards, environmental protection, and decarbonization efforts through the International Maritime Organization.

The minister laid out port upgrades and seafarer training programs happening back home under the current administration. He promised Nigeria would push for more capacity building in developing countries and keep advocating for fair access to maritime resources across the board during the two-year term.
