NRM ups nomination fee to trim candidate field

NRM lawmakers want to raise fees for people running for parliament from 2 million to 3 million Ugandan shillings. Isaac Otimgiw from Padyere County told reporters about this plan on April 4 after their party meeting at the President's office. Some members even suggested making it 5 million shillings to stop less serious candidates. They believe higher costs will mean fewer people trying to win seats in each area. Many think this helps make elections simpler by cutting down on total candidates.

Not everyone agrees with raising the price tag. William Museveni from Buwekula South thinks 3 million shillings costs way too much money. He worries that poor people and young citizens who want to serve their communities might lose their chance. He suggested dropping the fee down to just 1 million shillings instead. This would let more regular citizens join politics rather than just rich folks. The debate shows different views about who should run for office.

Dr. Tanga Odoi runs the NRM election team and shared facts about party members. The party claims 24 million people belong to NRM right across Uganda. Many joined as teenagers starting at age 16. Officials plan to clean up their lists soon through local meetings called Barazas. They expect to remove the names of people who have died or can't legally vote. The final count might go down to about 19.4 million actual voters when everything checks out.

Party elections for picking who runs for parliament will happen in July 2025. People wanting these spots must show interest between June 2 and June 15 next year. The actual voting day for parliament hopefuls is July 16. Local chairperson elections follow on July 24. Odoi wants everyone campaigning together rather than separately. The party rules say members should act like family during election season and focus on real issues instead of attacking each other.

Odoi believes his team works independently to keep elections fair. He admits they lacked proper voter lists before but claims the current register looks about 90 percent complete. Fair elections matter because unhappy losers often run as independent candidates. Even with perfect systems, some people just hate losing. Odoi mentioned seeing complaints over tiny vote differences because of human ego problems. Government leader Hamson Obua confirmed they accepted reports about these plans during their meeting. The party also discussed how it would help create wealth for regular Ugandans through government programs worth trillions of shillings.
