NUP cries foul as top members seized near Masaka Road

Opposition leaders are vanishing, only for the cops to casually admit grabbing them later. Bobi Wine slammed the government after his Head of Mobilisation, Habib Buwembo got snatched along Masaka Road with Josephine Nakakembo and Ronald Batabaale. The NUP president also noted that Robert Zziwa disappeared slightly earlier to join a growing list of missing comrades. He described these moves as weak attempts to save a crumbling dictatorship while noting that unidentified persons took the victims to unknown locations.

Rachael Kawala from the Kampala Metropolitan Police later confirmed that her department actually holds Buwembo, Batabaale, and Nakakembo. She stated the trio currently sits in custody awaiting court appearances, but refused to list specific charges against them. The official release noticeably failed to mention Zziwa or address the initial lack of communication regarding their whereabouts.

Party officials argue these actions fit a pattern of state repression designed to intimidate rivals during campaign season. They demanded that authorities respect constitutional rights regarding due process and access to lawyers instead of hiding detainees. Security agencies insist they lawfully investigate suspects despite the opposition characterizing these events as politically motivated kidnappings.
