NVIDIA H20 chip frenzy erupts as China races to stockpile foreign AI power

NVIDIA anticipates the Trump administration will approve export licenses for H20 GPU sales to China after months of restrictions. TrendForce research firm urges Chinese chip designers to keep developing domestic alternatives despite the potential policy shift. Foreign AI chip procurement ratios could jump to 49 percent from the previous 42 percent mark.

Chinese companies like Huawei struggle to match NVIDIA's technology due to manufacturing limitations imposed by US export controls. Advanced lithography equipment remains off-limits while TSMC blocks access to cutting-edge chip production. TrendForce predicts massive pent-up demand will emerge once H20 shipments resume across China's cloud service providers.

The H20 chips will upgrade from HBM3 8hi memory to HBM3e 8hi during 2025. Jensen Huang compared the GPUs to US currency as a potential global AI computing standard. Chinese firms plan aggressive stockpiling while government-backed domestic chipmakers accelerate competing product development.
