The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) says it has no deal with President William Ruto's party for the next election. Edwin Sifuna, who leads ODM, talked about this on Thursday.
There have been rumors that the two parties might work together in 2027. But Sifuna said this is not true. "I can say for sure there is no agreement between ODM and UDA about 2027," he stated.
Sifuna also said being popular matters more than political ties. "If people don't like you, it doesn't matter how many leaders support you. We would lose the election with Ruto even if ODM helped him," he explained.
ODM wants to get power. But it will not give up its beliefs to do so. Sifuna said only one person decides what the party does. "If you want to know what ODM thinks about coalitions, listen to Raila Odinga. He is the party leader," Sifuna said.
Sifuna shared that ODM will keep fighting for what it stands for. He noted that some ODM members have ideas about joining other parties, but in the end, Odinga will make the choice.
ODM has been a major part of Kenyan politics for over twenty years. It has had a candidate in every presidential election since its start. Sifuna said the party still wants to win. "Political parties exist to get power, honestly," he stated.
Sifuna pointed out that even when ODM had many partners, it still lost elections. "We lost an election with 26 parties. It was hard just to get the leaders to meet. We came up short," he said. He added that people were upset ODM did not keep its promises.
Sifuna says ODM must focus on issues that are important to Kenyans. "If we don't fix those problems, we will lose. It doesn't matter what else we do," he said. He stressed that the government needs to do what it says it will do.
