Operation Basadi empowers women in festive crime fight

A women-led initiative within the South African Police Service, Operation Basadi, is actively engaging communities to promote safety ahead of the festive season. The program combines operational activities with educational outreach, focusing on issues such as gender-based violence and substance abuse. Recent events were held in Tembisa, Gauteng, and Sterkspruit, Eastern Cape, involving collaborations with community policing forums and other local groups.

In Tembisa, officers conducted door-to-door visits and held awareness talks, documenting community concerns for referral to government departments. A similar outreach in Sterkspruit included a roadblock on the R26 highway and engagements at a local mall and taxi rank. Officials stated the initiative aims to build trust and empower residents through a visible police presence and preventative education. This effort forms part of the broader national Safer Festive Season operations.
