Overloaded truck wrecks Okollo Bridge, Madi road chaos

Uganda's Works and Transport Ministry has closed Okollo Bridge in Madi-Okollo district after an overloaded vehicle damaged its structure. The bridge connects the Arua-Nebbi highway and suffered damage when trucks violated established height and weight restrictions. Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa deployed a technical team to assess and repair the infrastructure. The government plans to complete retrofitting and reinforcement work within six weeks. Heavy vehicles pose safety risks and cannot cross the damaged span.

Trucks and buses traveling between Nebbi and Arua must use the Anyiribu-Ullepi road as an alternative route. The ministry later permitted passenger buses to cross the bridge at speeds not exceeding 20 kilometers per hour. These lighter vehicles fall into an acceptable traffic category for the weakened structure. Motorists heading from Arua to Kampala should take the Packwach-Inde-Ocoko corridor instead. The diversions will remain active until repairs restore the bridge to full operational capacity.
