Ozone Transient Emphasis restores the attack before limiting

Ozone Maximizer applies Transient Emphasis before limiting, and higher Amount settings produce more pronounced transients after the limiting stage. It is not repair the waveform after IRC has finished. The limiter receives a differently shaped attack from the start.

You notice the control's value when a master reaches the right loudness, but the drums begin to lose their front edge. Transient Emphasis can sharpen those attacks before they meet the ceiling, which changes what survives the limiter rather than simply turning the finished signal up.

Transient Emphasis also sits apart from True Peak limiting inside Ozone. True Peak is concerned with reconstructed peaks and output control, while Transient Emphasis is there to keep short attacks from feeling overly flattened as the Maximizer works.

Transient Emphasis reshapes the signal before IRC​

The processing order is the part most quick explanations skip. Transient Emphasis acts before the limiting stage, so a snare hit, kick click, stick attack, or other short event is reshaped before IRC decides how much gain reduction to apply. You are changing the material presented to the limiter, not adding a post-limiter transient effect.

A higher setting does not move the ceiling upward. IRC still has to obey the output ceiling, so the practical result is a change in transient contour and audibility rather than permission for peaks to escape. A drum can therefore feel sharper without the mastered file suddenly becoming uncontrolled.

The underlying idea has a close relative in a short-time crest-factor restoration method that detects transients whose crest factor has been reduced by earlier compression or limiting and applies brief gain restoration around the onset. Ozone does not disclose Transient Emphasis as this exact system, but the mechanism illustrates why restoring a short attack can change perceived punch without lifting sustained material equally.

You can hear the distinction most clearly on material with a strong body behind the initial hit. A snare whose attack has been softened may still sound loud, yet the crack that tells your ear where the hit begins has been reduced. Bringing some attack back can restore definition without making the whole snare sustain louder.

More attack can make the limiter work harder​

Transient Emphasis is not free headroom. Since the shaping happens before limiting, a stronger attack can present the IRC stage with a more demanding event, especially when the threshold is already pushed hard. More Amount can therefore improve definition while also increasing how aggressively the limiter has to react around that moment.

The trap is simple. A little more snap can make drums seem clearer at once, but too much can pull your attention toward clicks, stick noise, consonants, or other sharp edges that were balanced correctly before mastering.

Soft clipping solves a different problem. A clipper trims or reshapes the very top of a peak so the limiter has less peak height to manage, while Transient Emphasis deliberately preserves or sharpens the attack before limiting. Both can help a loud master keep punch, but one reduces peak burden, and the other protects the event you are in danger of flattening.

Once the limiter is already being driven several decibels, the difference becomes important. If the problem is excessive peak height, more Transient Emphasis can be the wrong direction. If the peak level is manageable but the attack has become dull, the control is addressing the actual loss.

IRC 5 kept Transient Emphasis despite the cost​

Ozone 12 still supports Transient Emphasis with IRC 5 even though the newer limiter architecture made that compatibility expensive to engineer. iZotope's development team said they considered removing the feature from IRC 5 to reduce CPU load and latency, then kept it after beta feedback supported its value.

IRC 5 already uses a more complex multiband limiting design. Transient Emphasis is not merely a workaround for older IRC modes with weaker transient handling. It remains a separate control because limiter architecture and attack shaping are two different decisions.

Start with the Amount at zero and push the loudest drum-heavy section until the weakness becomes obvious. Raise Transient Emphasis slowly while listening to the relationship between the attack and the body of each hit, not just the apparent brightness of the first few milliseconds.

A useful setting should make the hit easier to locate without making every sharp event jump forward. Level-match the comparison if the processed version feels more impressive, then listen away from the kick and snare as well. Vocals, cymbals, percussion, and bright synth attacks often reveal an overcooked setting before the main drums do.

True Peak can also change how much Transient Emphasis you need. If enabling True Peak makes a loud master feel softer at the front edge, a small Amount increase can restore some definition, but the better setting is the smallest one that fixes the attack without creating a new problem elsewhere.
