Pant limps back as Delhi tests broken foot gamble

Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant may return to cricket for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy later this month after medical evaluation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Pant fractured his right foot metatarsal on July 25 at Old Trafford after reverse-sweeping Chris Woakes in the fourth Test against England. He has been trained at the facility since mid-September, and medical staff will assess his condition next week.

Sources indicate Pant could play matches against Himachal Pradesh and Puducherry starting on Oct. 25 if cleared. The 28-year-old missed the West Indies Test series and the Australia white-ball tour beginning on Oct. 19. Strong performances in domestic competition could secure his selection for the two-Test series against South Africa starting on Nov. 14 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Pant scored 479 runs at 68.42 during the England tour.
