Pass on GST cuts now, Nidhi Khare tells greedy firms

Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare issued stern warnings to businesses that fail to transfer reduced tax benefits directly to customers. Companies must implement the new Goods and Services Tax rates immediately or face government enforcement actions. The secretary stated that businesses withholding these price reductions will face classification as engaging in unfair commercial practices. Authorities possess complete monitoring capabilities to ensure proper compliance across all sectors. Consumer grievances regarding pricing violations will receive prompt attention from the government.

The revised tax framework affects approximately 370 products and services across multiple categories. Essential food items like dairy products, baked goods, and beverages received significant tax relief. Personal care products, such as cleaning supplies and writing materials, became exempt from taxation entirely. Medical supplies for serious illnesses gained exemption status while diagnostic equipment rates dropped to five percent. Construction materials experienced a substantial decrease from twenty-eight percent to eighteen percent in taxation levels.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman projected that households will gain nearly two lakh crore rupees in additional spending capacity through these changes.
