Phone of slain MMU student found in Nairobi church offering

A shocking murder investigation has unfolded at Multimedia University involving the brutal killing of student Sylivia Kemunto. Detectives made a significant breakthrough after recovering her mobile phone from a church in Nairobi, which was allegedly offered as a donation artifact by the suspect, Philip Eric Mutinda.

Mutinda reportedly confessed to police about his tumultuous relationship with Kemunto. According to his statements, a reconciliation attempt on March 30 escalated into a violent confrontation. He allegedly strangled her with a hoodie rope after pushing her against a wall, causing head injuries. The suspect then placed her body in a suitcase, transported it to his room, and covered it with a blanket.

In the early morning hours of March 31, Mutinda transferred Kemunto's body to a water tank within the university hostel. He removed her SIM card and discarded it on campus grounds. After donating her phone to a church, he traveled home and subsequently confessed to his family. His parents accompanied him to Sultan Hamud Police Station, where he surrendered to authorities.

A postmortem examination conducted at Montezuma Funeral Home revealed critical details about her death. Chief government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor and family pathologist Dr. Martha Mwangi confirmed strangulation as the cause of death. They noted defensive injuries, indicating Kemunto attempted to resist her attacker. The body was discovered decomposed on April 2 atop Block B Hostel.

Kemunto's mother, Teresia Ayai, reported her missing on April 1. The victim's legal representatives highlighted broader concerns about rising femicide rates and questioned the university's role in student safety. A Kibera magistrate ordered Mutinda's detention at Capital Hill police station until April 28 to facilitate comprehensive investigations sparked by the DCI.
