Pogust Goodhead hires top litigator for Mariana case

The law firm Pogust Goodhead has hired veteran litigator Jonathan Wheeler to lead its massive group claim against mining company BHP concerning the 2015 Mariana dam collapse in Brazil. Wheeler, previously a senior partner and litigation head at Morrison Foerster in London, will oversee the case following a recent High Court ruling that found BHP liable for the disaster.

Pogust Goodhead’s chairman, Howard Morris, described Wheeler as a heavyweight addition whose experience with complex cross-border disputes is essential for the next phase of the litigation. This stage will focus on quantifying damages for over 600,000 Brazilian claimants. Wheeler stated that joining at this pivotal moment is a privilege, calling the liability judgment a watershed for corporate accountability.

This recruitment occurs after a period of internal changes at the firm, including the departure of its former CEO and the appointment of new directors. The current CEO, Alicia Alina, noted the firm is strengthening its global disputes team to build a more resilient organization capable of delivering justice for its clients.
