Police Crack Down on Reckless Driving This Easter

Kenya's police have warned drivers they'll face tough penalties for dangerous road behavior as students head home for Easter break. The police plan to crack down hard on anyone who puts lives at risk through careless driving. School vacation starts April 4, 2025, lasting until April 28, 2025, just after Easter celebrations end.

Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated they might cancel operating licenses for public transport companies caught breaking safety rules. He emphasized that school officials must ensure students travel home safely. Nyaga reminded bus drivers about their important responsibility when transporting students during this busy travel period.

Records show that most crashes happen because of avoidable human mistakes, such as driving fast, passing unsafely, drinking before driving, carrying excess passengers, and tired drivers behind the wheel. Nyaga mentioned that police expect heavy traffic across Kenya because many people travel during Easter, which coincides with school vacation time.

The National Police Service has created a detailed plan with other government agencies to boost road safety. They'll conduct enforcement checks throughout the country but need public help to keep roads safe. Nyaga stressed that everyone shares responsibility for preventing accidents, including drivers, people walking, cyclists, motorcycle riders, and passengers.

He asked bus company owners and motorcycle associations to team up with police to improve member behavior and passenger protection. Nyaga urged compliance with public service vehicle rules and labor laws that require proper insurance and employment contracts. He also expressed concern about increasing theft inside buses, often linked to unauthorized drivers and ticket collectors.

Nyaga called for strong action from everyone involved in public transportation to solve these problems. The police hope these preventive measures will reduce accidents during the busy travel season. Their main goal remains protecting all road users through strict enforcement combined with community cooperation.
