Police Investigate Sally Mugabe Hospital Fire After Rooftop Storeroom Blaze

Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed a fire broke out at Sally Mugabe Hospital on Saturday morning. The blaze started around 11:50 AM on June 28, 2025. Officials evacuated all patients from affected areas during the emergency. Police reported no injuries or deaths occurred during the incident. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the fire.

The flames began on a rooftop storeroom above a female ward. The fire also threatened the operating theater and intensive care unit below. Hospital staff quickly activated emergency procedures to move patients to safety. The incident created panic among people at the medical facility. Emergency teams responded rapidly to prevent a larger disaster.

Harare Fire Brigade arrived just seven minutes after receiving the emergency call. Firefighters took 30 to 40 minutes to contain the spreading flames. Mayor Jacob Mafume praised the quick response from emergency crews. The rooftop area stored official hospital records as required under Zimbabwe law. Solar panels and flammable paper materials helped the fire spread faster.

The hospital keeps documents permanently according to legal requirements for public institutions. About ten solar panels on the roof powered the laboratory below. Paper records and medical equipment stored on the rooftop fueled the flames. The fire department prevented the blaze from reaching other hospital departments. Officials continue investigating the exact cause of the rooftop fire.
