R Kelly Begs for Release, Claims Prison Murder Plot

R. Kelly's lawyers want him moved from prison to house arrest because they say someone plans to kill him. The legal team filed emergency papers on Tuesday claiming government officials tried to arrange his murder. They say prison workers asked another prisoner to kill Kelly during his 30-year sentence at a North Carolina federal jail. Court documents show officials promised freedom to a dying inmate named Mikeal Glenn Stine if he murdered the singer. Stine leads the Aryan Brotherhood gang and arrived at Kelly's prison unit back in March.

Stine planned to kill Kelly but changed his mind and warned him about the murder plot instead. Kelly's attorneys claim prison officials told Stine he would face charges for the killing but evidence would disappear and no conviction would happen. The lawyers say officials wanted Kelly dead because he might expose damaging secrets about his case. They accuse government workers of reading private letters between Kelly and his legal team. Court papers reveal officials approached a second gang member about killing both Kelly and Stine during June.

Kelly faces ongoing danger because more Aryan Brotherhood members keep arriving at his prison facility. His lawyer Beau Brindley asked the judge to release Kelly to home detention temporarily. Courts convicted Kelly of child sex crimes and racketeering charges during 2021. Appeals judges upheld his convictions and prison sentence earlier this year. The U.S Attorney's Office refused to comment about the emergency motion.
