Retired Teacher Scammed of RM164,000 in Facebook Lucky Draw Scheme

A 60-year-old retired teacher from Besut fell victim to online crooks who cleaned out his bank account through a fake Facebook promotion. The scammers tricked him into clicking a link that promised entry into a lucky draw supposedly run by a Malaysian bank. The victim entered his personal details on the fraudulent website without realizing he was handing over his financial information to criminals. Cyberthieves used his data to drain nearly all his savings through unauthorized transfers.

The retired educator only discovered the theft after his bank sent him an email warning about suspicious activity on his account. He rushed to a branch in Jertih and requested a full statement that revealed the shocking truth. Criminals had made 39 separate transfers from his savings account to various other accounts around the world. The unauthorized transactions left him with just RM30,000 from what had originally been around RM194,000.

Besut District Police Chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad confirmed officers are treating this as a criminal case under Section 420 of the Penal Code. The law covers cheating and dishonest schemes designed to steal property from victims. Azamuddin warned other residents to stay alert when they encounter suspicious links on social media platforms. He stressed that people should never share personal banking information through unsolicited online offers that seem too good to be true.
