Police reported that road accidents jumped during the Easter and Independence Day holidays compared to last year. Zimbabwe saw 384 crashes versus 286 in 2024. Deaths decreased from 26 to 21, but injuries rose from 159 to 178. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi shared these figures yesterday.
One major accident happened on April 21 around noon on the Harare-Bulawayo Road. A Toyota Hiace kombi carrying 18 passengers went off the road and flipped over. Three people died instantly, and another died at Norton Hospital. Fourteen others suffered injuries. Nyathi asked drivers to stop and help when accidents occur.
Police recorded three hit-and-run fatal accidents in Murewa and Harare during the holiday period. On April 19, an unknown motorcyclist struck a pedestrian who later died at Mutoko Hospital. The next day, an unidentified vehicle hit and killed a man at the Tynwald flyover. That same day, near Whitehouse, a Nissan Caravan hit a 66-year-old man, who died at Parirenyatwa Hospital. All drivers fled these scenes.
