Rohr Names Squad Excludes Injured and Disciplined Players

Benin head coach Gernot Rohr picked 25 players for the big games against Zimbabwe coming up soon. These matches count toward making it to the 2026 World Cup. The first game happens on March 21 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, far from home. Then the team travels to Abidjan in Ivory Coast to face South Africa on March 25.

The team includes young talent Candas Fiogbé who plays for Atalanta's under-20 side in Italy. Unfortunately, Aiyegun Tosin and Cédric Hountondji cannot join because they got hurt. The coach left out Olivier Verdon because of discipline problems. Most players come from foreign leagues - only two play inside Benin itself.

For goalkeepers, Rohr chose Saturnin Allagbé from Bulgaria, Marcel Dandjinou from South Africa, and Serges Obassa from Nigeria. The defense includes players from many countries like France, Romania, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Switzerland. Moise Adilehou, Brandon Agounon, Rodrigue Fassinou, David Kiki, Rachid Moumini, Tamimou Ouorou, Yohan Roche, Rabiou Sankamao, and Mohamed Tijani make up the defensive group.

The midfield consists of Mattéo Ahlinvi from Russia, Mariano Ahouangbo and Gislain Ahoudo, both from Tunisia, Samadou Attidjikou from Egypt, Sessi d'Almeida from Cyprus, Dodo Dokou from Egypt, and Imourane Hassane from Switzerland. Up front, the forwards selected were Jodel Dossou from Luxembourg, Candas Fiogbé from Italy, Andréas Hountondji from Belgium, Steve Mounié from Germany, Junior Olaitan from France, and Steve-Waren Traoré from Finland.
