Rukungiri Uproar as Muhwezi Wins Unopposed

Jim Muhwezi won the Rukungiri District party leadership race without any competition. The security minister faced no opponent after Henry Tumukunde quit the contest. Tumukunde left the race because he saw problems during the election process. Both men served as security ministers at different times during their careers. Muhwezi automatically became the district NRM chairman after his rival stepped away.

Tumukunde said he made his decision after careful consideration of the situation. The former minister promised to keep working for the Rukungiri people despite leaving the chairman race. People watching the campaign said Tumukunde's supporters caused trouble during political events. Reports claim his team attacked a local security officer during campaign activities. Tumukunde denied these accusations but still decided to withdraw from the contest.

The retired general continues his political work through a different path. Tumukunde campaigns for the Rukungiri Municipality parliament seat instead of district leadership. He wants to represent the area in national government rather than local party politics. Muhwezi will help gather voter support across the district before the 2026 elections. Party leaders expect him to strengthen NRM backing throughout Rukungiri communities.
