Ruto Furious as Blogger Dies Behind Bars

Kenyan President William Ruto spoke about blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang who died during police custody last week. The Migori writer had posted content about Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat before his arrest. Police claim Ojwang hit his head against cell walls at Central Police Station. Officers took him to Mbagathi Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Many citizens doubt the official police story about what happened.

Angry Kenyans question authorities on social media about the suspicious death circumstances. Police suspended several officers who worked the night Ojwang died at the station. The President called the death heartbreaking and demanded full investigation from oversight groups. Ruto reminded police they must protect people they arrest and keep them safe. He wants Independent Policing Oversight Authority to find truth about the blogger death.

Human rights groups worry about attacks on free speech across Kenya. Activists face harassment and mysterious deaths after criticizing government officials online. Caroline Mwatha died under disputed conditions after documenting police killings during 2021. Blogger Robert Alai suffered repeated arrests for posting critical government content. Amnesty International Kenya says the country criminalizes free expression and demands real accountability.
