Ruto Snags China Cash for Rail and Road

Kenya struck deals with China during President Ruto's visit that include building more railway lines. The countries agreed to extend the Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha to Kisumu and later to Malaba. They also plan to widen several roads, like the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway, under China's Belt and Road program.

China will help Kenya create smarter traffic systems in Nairobi. The Intelligent Transport Management System uses cameras and special traffic lights to control city traffic without needing many police officers. Samsung C&T signed last year to redesign 25 major junctions and build a traffic center near Mombasa Road. This system aims to cut down traffic jams and help people move around faster.

The new agreements cover roads in various parts of Kenya. China Development Bank will pay for 15 rural roads across the country. The deal includes doubling lanes on the Northern Bypass and Kiambu Road. Eldoret City will see new roads with an eastern bypass and wider highways at Cheplasgei-Maili Tisa.

Both nations signed an agreement about railway laws and operations. This agreement creates the foundation for modern rail connections throughout the region. Kenya serves as an important hub for China's development strategy in Africa. The countries first agreed on the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway back in 2014.
