Sabah east coast blackout hits 230000 after the Kolopis tower collapse

Sabah Electricity will deploy three emergency measures after the transmission infrastructure collapsed during the weekend storms. The 275-kilovolt power lines serving eastern districts failed Saturday at 5:05 pm when Tower 5 toppled from landslide damage. Heavy rainfall triggered soil erosion that brought down the structure near the Kolopis substation. Power disruptions affected 230,000 customers across Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna, Beluran, and Kinabatangan districts. SE received approximately 3,000 complaint calls during the blackout period.

CEO Mohd Yaakob Jaafar announced that conductor bridging will reroute electricity within two days through alternative pathways. Emergency restoration systems require eight additional days for complete installation at the damaged site. The company will construct a replacement tower at RM3 million over three months for permanent repairs. Teams of 50 workers face challenging conditions, including weather damage and blocked access roads, during restoration efforts.
