Sabah landslide rips Penampang tower, Hajiji Noor vows to restore power

A transmission tower collapsed after ground shifted beneath it during a landslide at Kampung Sarapung in Penampang. The incident cut electrical power to eastern Sabah regions yesterday evening at 5:05 pm. Chief Minister Hajiji Noor reported that approximately 230,000 residents lost electricity across six districts. Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Kunak, Semporna, and Beluran experienced complete blackouts when the 275KV Kolopis-Segaliud transmission system failed. Technical crews from Sabah Electricity began emergency repairs immediately after the outage occurred.

Workers plan to bridge electrical conductors as a temporary solution while constructing replacement infrastructure. An emergency tower will be erected within eight days to restore partial service to affected communities. Engineers will then build a permanent transmission tower to prevent future disruptions. The state government acknowledged the hardship residents face without electricity and requested public patience during restoration efforts. Repair teams continue working continuously until full power returns to all affected areas.
