Samsung dumps Galaxy S26 Plus in Apple-style trick, fans fume

Samsung prepares to launch three Galaxy S26 smartphones during early 2026 at its annual Galaxy Unpacked presentation. Industry reports indicate the company will eliminate its traditional Plus model from the lineup. The Korean manufacturer appears ready to follow Apple's strategic direction by replacing the middle-tier option with an Edge variant. Display measurements reveal the base model will feature a 6.27-inch screen while the Edge version expands to 6.66 inches. The flagship Ultra model maintains its premium positioning with a 6.89-inch panel.

Apple similarly plans to substitute its iPhone 17 Plus with the slimmer iPhone 17 Air model this year. Samsung's Edge device achieves remarkable thinness at just 5.8 millimeters but requires significant compromises. The ultra-thin design accommodates only a 3,900 milliampere-hour battery and limits rear cameras to two sensors. Company executives acknowledge these limitations represent deliberate engineering choices rather than technical constraints. Advanced computational photography algorithms enable the Edge model to surpass both the Galaxy S25 Ultra's 4x zoom and iPhone's 5x optical zoom capabilities through sensor cropping techniques.

Market performance data suggests the current Galaxy S25 Edge generates modest sales volumes despite its technical achievements. Samsung risks substantial revenue reduction by discontinuing the popular Plus configuration that traditionally bridges price gaps between base and Ultra models. The Elec publication maintains an inconsistent reliability record regarding product launch predictions. Samsung's final decision remains uncertain as the company evaluates consumer preferences against manufacturing efficiency considerations.
