Saudi slams Israel’s Somaliland move, unity over recognition

Saudi Arabia just trashed Israel's Somaliland recognition. The Kingdom strongly condemned Israel's historic move to formally recognize the breakaway region as independent. This happened on December 26, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed a joint declaration with Somaliland's president, linking it to the Abraham Accords. Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement rejecting this mutual recognition. They expressed full support for the Federal Republic of Somalia's sovereignty and territorial unity.

The Saudi statement called the action a violation of international law. It said the move entrenches unilateral secessionist measures. Riyadh reiterated its rejection of any parallel entities undermining Somali unity. They affirmed support for Somalia's legitimate institutions and commitment to regional stability. This places Saudi Arabia alongside a growing list of condemning nations and blocs.

Somalia's government previously labeled the recognition an unlawful attack on its sovereignty. Other major players like Egypt, Turkey, and Djibouti also rejected it. The African Union, Arab League, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and Gulf Cooperation Council all issued firm rejections. They each reaffirmed that Somaliland remains part of Somalia. Analysts note this could strain Horn of Africa relations. While Somaliland celebrates a diplomatic breakthrough, Saudi Arabia's stance highlights its role as a key ally to Mogadishu, prioritizing existing regional stability over this new diplomatic shift.
