Seven face torture charges over burial ordeal in Nyamira

Seven men face jail for hurting a lady at a funeral. The court says they grabbed her, locked her up, and beat her. These men - Dismark, Lameck, Jones, Elijah, Zacharia, Robert, and Martin - said they did not do it when they went before Judge Bernard. The police say they made Mellen Moraa throw dirt on her dead husband's grave because of old tribal rules. This all went down last month in a small village, making many people very mad.

Mellen told police these men put her in a room with her dead husband's body for many hours. She did not want to be there. The attack made lots of women leaders speak up. They met at the big government building to say how bad this was. Top women from the Senate and other places called it mean and old-fashioned. Someone took a video of the attack, which spread fast on the internet. Many people saw it and felt angry.

The women leaders said it was awful that grown men would hurt a lady this way. They called it uncivilized and harsh. Mr. Mwangi, who works for the court, said the men hurt Mellen very badly. They wanted to make her follow old ways she did not like. He asked the judge to keep them in jail during the case. He worried they might mess with the facts if they went free.

The men had lawyers who fought hard against this idea. The judge said these men have rights just like anyone else. He let them go if they paid some money first. Each man must give 100,000 shillings with someone to back them up, or 50,000 shillings cash. They must come back to court on April 23 to keep fighting their case.

The whole country watched this story unfold. It shows how the old ways and new laws can clash. Many Kenyans feel upset about what these men did. The video helped people see what really happened that day. Without it, maybe nobody would have known about Mellen's pain. The court will decide if these seven men broke the anti-torture law from 2017.
