Shocking Haitian gang attack kills Kenyan cop heartbreak at home

A family in Naserian Village feels very sad after a police officer died in Haiti. The officer was shot by people from gangs when he was working on February 23, 2025. He was part of a group of 600 Kenyan police officers helping in Haiti since 2024.

The National Police Service said the officer, who was 28 years old, was hurt badly during the attack near Port au Prince. People took him to the hospital, but he died from his injuries.

The father of the dead officer, Kaetuai Salaash, said this made his family very upset. Police officers came to his house on Monday morning to tell him what happened. He wants the government to bring his son's body back to Kenya for a funeral.

The officer's brother, Amos Kaetuai, said they lost someone who helped pay for things the family needed. They felt shocked because they had been talking with him since he went to Haiti 8 months ago. He said his brother was the only person in the family with a steady job.

The wife, Naomi Samuel, remembered her husband as loving and caring. He always made sure his family and two children had everything they needed. She said they hadn't talked on the phone lately because he was busy, but they sent messages to each other. She feels very sad because she must take care of their young children by herself.

The officer joined the Police Service in 2021. He worked in Wajir and Mandera counties before going to Haiti in June 2024. He is the first police officer who died in Haiti since Kenyan officers started working there.
