Shubman Gill out of Test with neck injury

India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens after sustaining a neck spasm that required hospitalization. The 26-year-old retired hurt for four runs and was subsequently taken to a private hospital for medical examination, where he remains under observation and monitoring by the Board of Control for Cricket in India medical staff.

The injury occurred when Gill swept South African off-spinner Simon Harmer for a boundary but immediately clutched his neck in discomfort. Broadcast footage later revealed he had been performing neck-loosening exercises with team physio Kamlesh Jain and grimacing before play commenced. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant assumed leadership duties in his absence. Gill departed the stadium on a stretcher wearing a neck brace, accompanied by the team doctor, a security liaison officer, and his father, Lakhwinder Gill. This marks the third instance in recent months that neck stiffness has sidelined the batter from international competition.
