Sony concedes console war, will shift PlayStation games to rivals

Sony reported PlayStation 5 shipments reached 80.3 million units through June during first quarter 2025 earnings. Game and Network Services revenue climbed 8 percent annually to 936.5 billion yen while third-party software sales drove growth despite foreign exchange headwinds. Monthly active users across PlayStation platforms grew 6 percent to 123 million accounts with gaming time rising at similar rates. Operating income jumped 2.3 times from the previous year to 148 billion yen, setting new quarterly records for the division. The company raised full-year forecasts based on stronger user engagement trends.

Executive Sadahiko Hayakawa revealed Sony shifts away from hardware-focused operations toward platform expansion strategies during investor discussions. Recent job postings suggest PlayStation games may appear on Xbox and Nintendo systems to boost user communities. This strategic pivot could extend beyond live service titles like Helldivers 2 to encompass broader game portfolios. Such changes would leave Nintendo as the sole manufacturer maintaining exclusive first-party content for its consoles.
