Splitgate 2 Battle Royale Wakes Up Stale Shooter Scene

Battle royale games lost their excitement after becoming popular with PUBG leading early success. Apex Legends, Fortnite and Warzone joined the trend but players grew tired of repetitive gameplay. Splitgate 2 launched today during Summer Game Fest 2025 with portal-based movement and surprise battle royale features. The Halo-inspired shooter combines familiar gunplay with fast movement similar to Titanfall mechanics. Four-player squads drop from the sky onto portal-filled battlefields for intense combat action.

Company founder Ian Proulx criticized major gaming studios EA and Activision during the launch announcement. He explained his frustration with repeated Call of Duty releases and missing Titanfall sequels from his childhood gaming experiences. Splitgate 2 offers 60-player matches across five different biomes connected through massive portals. Players must survive long enough to unlock the fifth biome during each match. Real-time events like Portal EMP or Drop Frenzy add variety to standard battle royale gameplay patterns.
