Spotify raids music DNA vault

Spotify has purchased WhoSampled, a London platform that catalogs musical samples and interpolations across more than 1.2 million recordings. The streaming service plans to integrate the database into its interface through a feature called SongDNA, allowing subscribers to trace the creative lineage of tracks without leaving the application.

The acquisition brings WhoSampled's team and its archive of over 620,000 documented samples, covers, and remixes under Spotify's control. Financial terms were not disclosed. The companies previously collaborated beginning in 2016 when WhoSampled enabled account linking for enhanced music exploration.

WhoSampled will continue operating independently while receiving infrastructure improvements. The platform announced faster content moderation, elimination of display advertising, and free access to its mobile application for all users.
