Sri Lanka opt to bowl vs Bangladesh in tense Asia Cup clash in Abu Dhabi

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the coin toss and decided his team would bowl first against Bangladesh during their Asia Cup 2025 encounter. The Group B match took place at Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Saturday as the tournament's fifth contest. Asalanka explained that the fresh pitch conditions influenced his decision to field initially. Bangladesh made one change to their lineup by bringing in Shoriful Hasan to replace the unavailable Taskin Ahmed. Wanindu Hasaranga returned to action for Sri Lanka after missing previous matches.

The teams entered this clash with contrasting recent form despite Sri Lanka holding a 12-8 advantage in their historical Twenty20 International meetings. Bangladesh secured their first series victory on Sri Lankan soil earlier this year with a 2-1 triumph. The Tigers also defeated their opponents during a tight encounter at the 2024 World Cup. Both nations currently occupy positions eight through ten in ICC Twenty20 International rankings alongside Afghanistan. Each game carries significant importance for qualification hopes in this competitive group stage.
