Students across Bangladesh exploded into massive protests after the Supreme Court made a decision they hated. The top court backed a High Court ruling that kept the freedom fighter quota system alive for government jobs. Young protesters had demanded the complete removal of quotas based on a 2018 government order. Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan led a six-member panel that crushed student hopes. The court also told the government to file a special petition against the earlier High Court decision.
Angry students announced they would skip all classes and tests starting July 7. Dhaka University became the heart of the rebellion as hundreds gathered near the central library. Protesters marched through campus before reaching Shahbagh intersection where they created chaos for five hours. Traffic came to a complete standstill across the entire capital city. HSC exam students and their parents suffered tremendous hardship trying to move around the city.
Bangladesh Chhatra League activists tried to stop the protests using dirty tricks. They locked dormitory gates at several university halls to trap students inside. Masterda Surja Sen Hall and Kabi Jasimuddin Hall had padlocks on their entrance gates. Students fought back and forced authorities to open the locked doors. Many protesters still could not join the movement because of continued interference from pro-government student groups.
The rebellion spread like wildfire across the country as universities everywhere joined the fight. Comilla University students blocked the major Dhaka-Chattogram highway creating five kilometers of traffic jams. Jahangirnagar University protesters shut down the Dhaka-Aricha highway for thirty minutes before lifting their blockade. Students from eight different universities paralyzed major roads demanding an end to the quota system.
