Students Scrap NMDPRA Protests In Last Minute Twist

Two student groups canceled their plans to protest against Nigeria's oil regulator. The National Association of Nigerian Students and the National Association of Polytechnic Students had demanded the chief executive resign. Both unions accused Farouk Ahmed of stealing public money and giving jobs to friends. They said he abused his power at the petroleum agency. The groups wanted millions of students to march against Ahmed.

Students planned different dates for their actions against the agency. One group picked June 4 and 5 for a visit to ask questions. The other union chose June 12 for their big protest march. Both organizations sent angry letters on May 27 calling for Ahmed to step down. They said the petroleum boss had broken rules and wasted taxpayer funds.

The student leaders changed their minds after learning more facts. They admitted their claims were wrong and had no proof behind them. Union officers said they found misleading information that painted a false picture. The groups apologized for any trouble their accusations caused Ahmed. They promised to work with the petroleum agency instead of fighting it.

Both unions want to talk rather than march in the streets. Student representatives said protests should be the last choice when solving problems. They believe cooperation works better than angry demonstrations. The groups will meet with petroleum officials to discuss their concerns. Leaders said they want transparency but will seek it through peaceful talks.
