Sungura Ace Pinjisi Dies as Mutoko Mourns His Loss

Sungura musician Tatenda Pinjisi died Sunday at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital from injuries after a Friday car crash near Norton Tollgate. The 34-year-old was traveling to Kadoma for a performance when the accident occurred. Two band members and a female passenger they picked up at Harare Showgrounds died immediately. His burial happens tomorrow in Kahwa Village, Mutoko, with his body taken there today. Family spokesperson Howard Pinjisi described him as their breadwinner who left behind young children.

Howard called his younger brother fun-loving and exceptionally talented. Many artists shared grief online, including Alick Macheso, who announced the death during a Sunday show at Jongwe Corner. Gospel singer Dorcas Moyo remembered him as someone who made others feel valued. Producer Gibson Makumbe expressed shock about losing Pinjisi during their 12-song project. United Kingdom musician Romeo Gasa and Australia-based performer Cozzy Kozile posted tributes on social media.

Mourners have gathered at House Number 3117 Soromiyo in Ruwa. Pinjisi gained fame with his 2015 hit Saina from his debut album Rumbidzo. He fathered three sons during his life. The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe offered condolences, calling him a sungura genre luminary whose rhythms became the heartbeat of countless admirers.
