Swapo leaders vie for Oshana coordinator post

Five Swapo party members have emerged as potential candidates to replace Oshana coordinator Werner Iita, who will assume his parliamentary seat next month from position 34 on the party's list.

Party insiders name regional information secretary Magdalena Hango, regional Swapo Party Youth League coordinator Silas Uugwanga, Oshana regional youth forum chairperson Absalom Itamalo, John Shitudeni, and former Oshakati councilor Gabriel Kamwanka as contenders for the position. Three sources close to the matter confirmed these names. The election is expected after the Swapo extraordinary congress in late February.

Several potential candidates expressed uncertainty about their candidacy. Kamwanka stated he did not know about the contest, and Uugwanga deemed comments premature before official party nominations. Itamalo remained unreachable, and Shitudeni was unavailable for comment.

Iita emphasized the need for proper vetting of coordinator candidates, stating party members must express their choice through voting. "As long as the person meets the qualifications for the position, people must voice their choice and vote," Iita said.

The departing coordinator also announced the Oshana region's endorsement of Swapo Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as party president at the upcoming extraordinary congress. This decision emerged from a party regional meeting on Tuesday. "We endorse meme Netumbo, no other candidate," Iita declared.
