Tang Renjian gets death-ish for bribery in China

A Chinese court sentenced Tang Renjian to death with a two-year suspension on Sunday for accepting bribes. The former agriculture minister received money and property valued at more than 268 million yuan during his career from 2007 through 2024. Officials in Jilin province delayed his execution after Tang admitted guilt for his crimes. The Changchun Intermediate People's Court announced the verdict through state media.

China's Communist Party removed Tang from membership last November after investigators targeted him for corruption. His case moved unusually fast compared to standard anti-graft procedures. Similar investigations affected defense officials Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe recently. President Xi Jinping launched widespread purges across security agencies in 2020.

Tang served as the governor of Gansu Province before President Xi appointed him Agriculture Minister in 2020. The government seeks absolute loyalty from police, prosecutors, and judges through these campaigns. Xi declared corruption poses the greatest danger to the Communist Party's survival. Anti-corruption efforts continue expanding across government departments.
