Tanzania’s meat hunger calls for a ranching boom, minister says

Dr. Bashiru Ally wants investors to throw cash at meat production immediately because the Minister for Livestock and Fisheries claimed during a trip to the Kagera region that everyone is going to be eating way more beef soon. The politician argued that people in Tanzania and abroad are craving more animal protein since consumption might triple by 2030 due to cities getting bigger and incomes going up across Africa. He stated that the current setup cannot handle the pressure without serious funding for technical stuff and facilities like feedlots and tanneries. The guy mentioned that exports reached 14,000 metric tonnes recently, even though the goal was 50,000, and he believes the area is perfect for raising exotic cattle or goats because livestock already makes up 20 percent of the local economy.

The minister suggested that the region has a prime spot in the Great Lakes area, which helps with selling goods, and he thinks the available water and grass could be used better with new tech. He listed state-run ranches at Kitengule, Mabale, Kagoma, Kikulula, Missenyi, and Rusumo as places where private companies could team up with the government to make some money. Ally feels that improving infrastructure is the only way to get past the limits of small farms and unlock the real value of the sector.
