Tanzanite gets a boost, Mirerani plans glittering comeback

Tanzania's minerals boss, Anthony Mavunde, rolled out plans to juice up tanzanite's street cred and hook local traders with better systems at the Mirerani exchange hub. The gemstone brought in 161 billion shillings before, and the whole mining game just crossed 1 trillion in revenue by mid-2025. Mavunde said weak coordination killed prices over time because nobody managed production properly.

Officials want to rebrand the stone for bougie international markets while firing up domestic auctions and global exhibitions. The exchange center gets upgraded to track deals and grab taxes better. Mavunde floated building a full tanzanite city with hotels and shipping to pump jobs, and he noted 291 young people had already grabbed mining permits through government programs. The Bank of Tanzania promises payments within 24 hours for legit sales, plus an export fund so Tanzanian dealers can buy bulk and scrap with foreign buyers instead of getting pushed out.
