Tawengwa sends youths on 800km walk to Vic Falls for a swamp

Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Senator Charles Tawengwa praised Zimbabwe Youth in Tourism for organizing an ambitious 800-kilometer walking campaign from Harare to Victoria Falls. The initiative aims to promote wetlands conservation awareness among citizens nationwide. Permanent Secretary Cosmas Chiringa delivered the minister's remarks during the official departure ceremony yesterday. Tawengwa emphasized that this demonstration reflects young people's dedication to environmental stewardship and national progress. The walkathon empowers youth to assume leadership roles in protecting Zimbabwe's natural resources.

The minister highlighted Harare's significant wetland areas, particularly Mukuvisi Woodlands, Cleveland Dam, and Monavale Vlei. These ecosystems provide essential services such as water purification, flood management, and wildlife habitat preservation. Tawengwa stressed the importance of engaging young citizens in environmental programs and sustainable income-generating projects. The walkathon participants represent patriotic leaders committed to creating a sustainable future for their nation. Their efforts demonstrate the value of youth involvement in conservation initiatives.

The walking campaign strategically coincides with preparations for the 15th Meeting of the Conference of Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Zimbabwe will host this international gathering in Victoria Falls from July 23 through 31. Zimbabwe Youth Council chief executive Brian Nyagwande commended the initiative as evidence of unity among the country's young people. The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training has committed full support for the campaign. Zimbabwe Youth in Tourism director-general Stewart Mutizwa outlined goals that emphasize wetland importance, conservation threats, and Zimbabwe's commitment to international environmental agreements.
