Teacher in trouble for altered play

A Butere Girls High School teacher faces possible punishment after allegedly changing a school play script. The principal claims the teacher added anti-government material to Echoes of War during regional drama competitions. School officials say the original version performed at the county level differed from what students later presented at Chavakali High School. Students reportedly held signs with messages like Occupy Space, SHA, and Cash Cow during the performance.

The teacher must explain these changes within seven days or face consequences. The warning letter went to education officials, including the Teachers Service Commission. The situation has raised questions about creative freedom in school performances. The play explores governance, technology, and youth activism themes that sparked earlier controversy.

Officials previously banned the production, but courts overturned this decision. Former Senator Cleophas Malala, who wrote the play, was briefly detained by police, which led students to refuse to perform until his release. Interior Cabinet Secretary Murkomen later stated the government had no problems with the play itself but worried about politicians influencing student activities. He stressed keeping education separate from politics.
