President Bola Tinubu watched Governor Umo Eno switch political parties from his Lagos home on Friday. The president sat on his couch and viewed the live coverage of the governor leaving the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress. National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu joined Tinubu and two other officials as they followed the event on television. The ceremony took place at the Akwa Ibom State capital of Uyo. Eno made his move official during a public gathering.
Several APC governors attended the defection ceremony to support Eno. Hope Uzodimma from Imo State traveled to witness the political switch. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also showed up for the event. Other governors present were Dapo Abiodun from Ogun State and Sheriff Oborevwori from Delta State. Monday Okpebholo of Edo State and Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State completed the group of supporters.
Eno had praised Tinubu and the APC even before his defection from the PDP. The governor backed Tinubu for a second presidential term and criticized his former party's leadership problems. Tinubu remains at his Lagos residence for the Sallah holidays before returning to Abuja. The president will resume his regular duties after the religious celebration ends.
