Tomlinson Depot Gets Zimbabwean Makeover

President Emmerson Mnangagwa changed the name of Tomlinson Depot to Chimoio Camp during a Friday ceremony. The president opened new police housing units at the same time he announced the name change. Zimbabwe wants to remove colonial names from government buildings and replace them with African ones. The Second Republic started this project to honor liberation war heroes and victims. Colonial powers used English names to control local people and erase their history.

Chimoio Camp honors fighters who died during the 1977 Chimoio Massacre. The president said these brave soldiers should inspire current police officers to work harder. Zimbabwe remembers countries like Mozambique that helped during the independence struggle. The new name connects Zimbabwe to its fighting history against white rule. Government leaders want citizens to feel proud about their African heritage.

Police officers received 96 new homes across four apartment buildings during the same event. Mnangagwa believes good housing helps workers serve citizens better. Security forces need safe places to live with their families. The government plans to build more houses for uniformed officers across the country. Better living conditions help police fight crime and protect communities more effectively.
