Top Cop Walks Free After Sex Trafficking Bombshell

Uganda's top prosecutor just took back charges against police officer Gilbert Arinaitwe Bwana. The charges dealt with human trafficking.

The case ended Tuesday when state attorney Joseph Kyomuhendo gave the court papers saying they would stop the case. Judge Alice Komuhangi Khaukha ordered all of Arinaitwe's things returned to him. His passport should come back from another court. He will also receive his bail money of 2 million shillings.

The court said his police gun with 15 bullets must go back to Crime Intelligence. Prosecutors told the court last week they could not find any witnesses for their case against Arinaitwe. The judge gave them time to look, but they decided to drop everything.

Court papers said Arinaitwe brought a young woman from Mbarara with promises of housework. She claims he forced her into sex acts at gunpoint. She also said she worked without pay or enough food. A friend helped her reach the police after she told her what happened.

Arinaitwe became famous in 2011 when he pepper-sprayed politician Kizza Besigye during protests. He broke Besigye's car window with a gun before spraying him. Many people remember this as a bad moment in Uganda's political past.
