Trump Plays Pope and Catholics Are Outraged

Catholics criticized President Trump after he shared a fake picture of himself dressed as the Pope on official White House social media. The image appeared as the Church mourns Pope Francis, who died April 21. The New York State Catholic Conference said Trump mocked their faith. This comes after Trump recently told reporters he wanted to be pope.

Former President Biden faced similar anger last year when he made the cross sign at an abortion rights rally in Tampa. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni refused to comment on Trump's post during a Saturday press briefing. The Church is preparing for the conclave to pick a new leader starting Wednesday. The posted image shows Trump wearing white robes and a pointed hat, typical of bishops.

He appears serious with a finger raised high and a large cross around his neck. Italian ex-leader Matteo Renzi attacked Trump online, saying he offended believers and acted like a clown. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Trump, saying he attended Pope Francis' funeral and supports religious freedom. The Trump administration rejects claims that he made fun of the papacy.
