Trump vows military action if Qatar attacked again

The United States pledged to protect Qatar from external threats after an Israeli strike hit the Gulf nation last month. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday declaring that Washington will regard any armed attack on Qatari territory as a threat to American interests. The policy commits the U.S. to deploy diplomatic, economic, and military measures if necessary to defend Qatar and restore regional stability.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized to Qatar's prime minister on Monday for the Sept. 9 strike that targeted Hamas officials discussing a Gaza peace proposal. Netanyahu made the call from the White House while meeting Trump and promised not to launch similar attacks. Qatar hosts the largest American military installation in the region at al-Udeid Air Base, which serves as a headquarters for U.S. Central Command operations.
