Uganda has achieved significant milestones in expanding digital access and connectivity throughout the nation, according to the country's telecom regulator. Nyombi Thembo, who leads the Uganda Communications Commission as executive director, told attendees at a Kampala conference on Monday that policy objectives are being converted into real improvements for citizens seeking internet and mobile services. The sector recorded 34.6 million people using mobile money platforms, 16.5 million subscriptions for wireless internet access, and better frequency allocation that has lowered costs while improving service quality.
Government efforts through the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund have brought connectivity to educational institutions, medical facilities, and local administrative offices in areas where commercial providers would not typically invest. The fund was created in 2001 to extend communication infrastructure beyond commercially viable zones. Representatives from the mobile industry association praised these advances but stressed that additional regulatory changes remain necessary to maximize the digital economy's impact on health care, education, and financial services. State Minister for ICT Godfrey Kabbyanga said authorities are working toward 90 percent broadband availability across the country through backbone infrastructure projects and universal service initiatives.
