Uganda goes dark online as Museveni hunts term seven

Uganda just pulled the plug on the internet before their election. Authorities imposed a nationwide shutdown of public web access and restricted mobile services. This occurred ahead of a general election where President Yoweri Museveni seeks another term. The government cited concerns over misinformation and electoral fraud as justification for the blackout. Critics argue the move suppresses dissent and hinders independent monitoring of the voting process.

The Uganda Communications Commission directed all service providers to enforce the restrictions. Certain essential institutions like hospitals and banks, retained connectivity. The action mirrors similar measures taken during a previous election cycle, which caused significant economic damage. Over half the population is under twenty-five, with heavy reliance on social media for information and communication.

Museveni, in power for decades, faces multiple challengers. The most prominent is opposition figure Bobi Wine, whose campaign has faced severe state persecution. Security forces have repeatedly used violent tactics to disperse his rallies. Hundreds of his supporters have been arrested or injured in clashes with police.

The pre-election period has been marked by widespread reports of violence and intimidation. Security personnel have employed tear gas, live ammunition, and arbitrary detentions against opposition gatherings. International observer groups are present, but their ability to report findings is hampered by the communication blockade.

The blackout severely impacts daily economic activity and access to services. Businesses operating online are paralyzed, and educational functions are disrupted. The broader region watches closely, as such internet restrictions during elections set a concerning precedent for digital rights and democratic transparency. The outcome of this vote will significantly influence the nation’s political trajectory.
