Uganda invests Shs 25 billion in health college

Uganda will spend 25 billion shillings to build a College of Health Sciences at Mbarara University of Science and Technology to train more medical specialists. Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze announced the plan on behalf of Education Minister Janet Museveni, saying the project aims to address shortages in fields such as cardiothoracic surgery, nuclear medicine and oncology.

The government will allocate the funds in the 2025-26 budget year, with additional funding planned over four years to complete construction at the Kihumuro Campus. Officials said the facility will help reduce the need to send patients abroad for treatment. Museveni told graduates to serve their communities with integrity and compassion.

The university trains more than 6,600 students and has prepared 75 percent of its teachers to use the Competence-Based Curriculum. Authorities want that training completed by 2026. The institution supports national goals in agriculture, tourism, mineral development and technology.
