Uganda picks 41-man squad for CHAN showdown

Uganda soccer coaches Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso picked 41 players for the national team. The squad will prepare for the 2024 African Nations Championship tournament. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will host the competition from August 2nd through 30th next year. Teams can only use players from their local leagues for this tournament. Most players come from Uganda Premier League clubs except one player from a regional team.

Three major clubs dominate the selection list with seven players each. KCCA FC, Vipers SC, and SC Villa provided the most athletes for the national squad. Kitara FC and NEC FC each sent four players to join the team. URA FC and BUL FC contributed three players from their rosters. Express FC has two representatives on the final list.

The coaches picked five goalkeepers to compete for the starting position. Eighteen defenders will battle for spots on the back line. Twelve midfielders made the cut to control the center of the field. Eight forwards earned places to lead the attack against opponents. One player currently has no club team but still received a call-up.

Practice sessions begin Monday June 23rd at nine in the morning. Players will train at Prisons Ground located in the Luzira area. The team will work on tactics and fitness before the tournament starts. Coaches want players ready to represent their country with pride. Fans hope the squad can achieve success against other African nations.
